Small town always have quiet places. Landis quiet is different. Where people walking, music playing from the old broken radio, everybody is waiting for something to finish. Sometimes these fish customers stop talking, and look to where the sky embraces the water. I asked one woman, if she is okay, only speak: “long days change us, but this market never change. work here long enough, you see.” After that she leave the fish on the scale and walk out.
Behind the market there is a construction area. Nobody explains what they build. machines never working. Fence become taller. At night I see lights moving behind the plastic sheets. white lights going slow like searching underwater. Last winter, Mr. Gao from cleaning staff gone after taking this smoke break near the gate. Fish Manager tells everybody he quit suddenly and move south. Bicycle stay chained outside for maybe three or maybe four weeks after.

小镇上总不乏宁静之地，但兰迪斯（Landis）的这种宁静却别具一格。人们在此漫步，老旧破损的收音机里飘出乐声，每个人似乎都在等待着某件事的终结。有时，那些买鱼的顾客会突然止住交谈，凝视着天水相接的那一处远方。我曾问过一位妇人，问她是否安好；她只淡淡地答道：“漫长的岁月会改变我们，但这处集市却从未改变。只要你在这里待得够久，自然就会明白。” 说罢，她将鱼留在了秤盘上，径直走出了集市。
集市后方有一片施工区域。没人解释那里究竟在建造什么，那些机器也从未见其运转，唯有围栏日渐增高。夜幕降临，我透过塑料挡板，隐约可见后方有光影在移动。那是一束束白光，移动得缓慢而迟滞，仿佛是在水底搜寻着什么。去年的冬天，保洁员高先生（Mr. Gao）在门边抽完那支烟后，便从此消失得无影无踪。水产部的经理告诉大家，高先生是突然辞职，搬去南方生活了。而在那之后的三四周里，他的那辆自行车依然被锁在门外，孤零零地停在那里。
